In his book, The Little Book of Hygge, Meik Wiking explains hygge, pronounced HOOgah - is not an object but rather a feeling.  Borne out of togetherness and comfort, he observes that ‘the true essence of hygge is… basically like a hug, just without the physical touch”. 

Hygge invites us to pause and take in the simple pleasures in life; warm socks, a steaming hot cup of cocoa on a winters day, long baths with nice oils - the list is endless! It’s about making life easy and simple, choosing books over screens and not stretching oneself in a thousand directions.  It can feel perhaps almost overwhelming and alien, the prospect of stopping, of self-care, of taking time to enjoy nourishing food and luxuriating in just ‘being’; however in granting ourselves permission to slow down, we can celebrate the simple, free and joyful things in life that often get overlooked.

There are a few different ideas surrounding the roots of the word ‘hygge’, a popular one being that it comes from an ancient Norwegian word meaning "wellbeing". Others suggest that hygge stems from the Old Norse word "Hyggja". Wherever it truly originated, it is now universally agreed that it symbolises the feeling of wellbeing, comfort and warmth. The concept of hygge, (both in heritage, and the contemporary translations) are perfectly encapsulated within our BBQ Lodges. From the intimate and inviting spaces the lodges create, (their design is based upon the traditional Finnish reindeer herders “Kota” who used these types of shelters and lodges as they moved across the tundra), right down to the Scandinavian wood used to craft them, they are perfect hygge hideouts.
